Snakes and Ladders, and What Knots

By: Winnie Lim

Can a Chinese New Year orange bag carry more than just oranges?

Much like a snake shedding its skin, this project embodies the concept of transformation, revealing new purposes with each shift in form.

By tying the scarf, it can become a bag to carry mandarin oranges—a symbol of prosperity exchanged during Chinese New Year visits. When fully unrolled and laid flat, it becomes a softened version of the snakes and ladders board game, inviting playful moments with loved ones.

The project uses scarf as a medium and celebrates its versatility for many uses. Blending tradition and the joy of togetherness, Snakes and Ladders, and What Knots carries not just oranges but also an invitation to connect.
